Spring Runoff Resources

Stay prepared this spring by checking local stream and river flows and snow pack levels online with resources from the National Weather Service, US Department of Agriculture and US Geological Survey (USGS)!

As we head into June and temperatures are finally expected to return to normal as we start summer, snow will begin to melt off the Grand Mesa and surrounding mountains. Emergency Management, County staff and Road & Bridge are monitoring creek and river levels along with the National Weather Service and regional and state Emergency Management partners.

Below are links to the National Weather Service and United States Geological Survey (USGS) Stream Gauges for the Gunnison River and Surface Creek which is monitored at the Town of Cedaredge and above Cedaredge north of Ute Trail Rd near the Forest Service Boundary. Also included below is a link to the Snow Water Equivalent currently in Park Reservoir (9960 feet) on the Grand Mesa and the Gunnison River Basin Snowpack summary as of May 30, 2019.

Remember, if you live along Surface Creek or another major creek/river in Delta County and believe your home is at risk of localized flooding during runoff; sandbags are available free of charge to keep water out of basements, garages, foundations and home entrances. These sandbags are available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm at any of the Delta County Road & Bridge Shops:

District 1: 18830 G Road - Delta | 970-874-2133
District 2: 2544 S. Grand Mesa Drive - Cedaredge | 970-856-6800
District 3: 35677 Back River Rd – Hotchkiss | 970-872-3254

Can’t make it to Road & Bridge during the day? Sand and sandbags are available at the Orchard City Town Shops at the corner of 2100 Rd & Austin Rd on the West side of Tank Hill Rd (see photo above). From Hwy 65, take Austin Rd east to the 4-way stop at 2100 Rd. Turn right at the intersection and immediately to your right into the lot by the metal shop with sand piles. Sandbags will be under the cones at the sand pile in the center.

Orchard City Public Works staff will have limited supplies of bags on hand for residents to fill after hours and on the weekend at this location. If there are no sandbags, you can contact dispatch at 970-874-2015 to have Orchard City Public Works put out more.
