Detention – Delta County Jail

The Sheriff is responsible for the operation for the Delta County Detention facility, which has an annual budget over $1.4 million.  The Jail has 25 employees including certified and non-certified officers as detention personnel, courthouse security, off-site work release deputies, and a transport officer and three cooks for the kitchen.  The facility is responsible and entrusted with the care and safe keeping of all prisoners, both sentenced and those awaiting trial.

The detention facility was completed in 1986.  The jail has the ability to hold 73 men and women inmates.  However, this would seriously stress inmates and detention officers to maintain this population very long and a more realistic number would be closer to sixty.  Twenty of these spaces are currently set aside for inmates sentenced to work release.  Our average daily count is approximately 60. Our cooks served 55,,875  meals in 2003 at a cost of $1.48 per meal.

The facility was equipped with new security cameras and intercom system in 2003, enhancing security.

In 2004, the Delta County Sheriff’s Office opened the doors to a new off-site work release building. The building houses inmates sentenced for non-violent crimes who maintain employment during their sentence. Each inmate is required to pay $17.50 a day. In 2006, the average daily count in work release was 16, some days as many as 20. This generated $83,142.50 in work release fees.

Sheriff McKee continues to be aggressive and implement new ideas in an effort to maintain the most cost effective way of housing inmates. In 2007, the equipment and the training needed to implement a home detention program began. If sentenced for a non-violent crime and qualify for this program, an inmate may be fitted with a monitor and released to their home. This would drastically cut inmate cost to taxpayers.

TAC Program

Delta County Sheriff’s Office is a member of Transports Across Colorado (TAC).  TAC enables us to have prisoners transported to and from our facility to any other facility at a lower cost than if we had to do all our own transports.  It is a very useful program and utilizes teamwork between Colorado sheriff’s offices.  We are also involved with a program between sheriffs for transporting inmates throughout the northwest part of the U.S., saving several thousand dollars in 2006.

The mission of TAC is to cooperatively move prisoners between facilities in the safest, efficient and most cost effective manner.

Jail Information

All inmates are issued an inmate handbook (English and Spanish) upon entering the facility that details inmate’s rights and responsibilities and possible sanctions for violating these rules.
